Tempos Vega Sicilia

Spain | Ribera de Duero | Toro | Rioja

The family ownership of Bodegas Vega Sicilia is driven by sheer perfectionism. The constant search for the best are the hallmarks of the philosophy that prevail there.

History

  • 10th Century | Researchers date the history of the estate to the 10th century when the area began to develop around the Peñafiel castle and district.
  • 1848 | After numerous transformations and various leases on the estate, Toribio Lecanda bought it in 1848 and began to make wine, brandies and liqueurs until leaving it to his son Eloy who founded the winery in 1864. Eloy’s work in planting new types of vines and innovating in the winemaking processes  were well-recognized, receiving numerous international awards including one in 1882 by the Ministry of Public Works “for acclimatising exotic plants to our country”.
  • 1929 | Recognized at the Barcelona World’s fair for wine produced by winemaker Txomin Garramiola, known for their lengthy wooden ageing and a vintage released never less than seven years old. This is one of the characteristics that Vega Sicilia has kept up over the last 100 years.
  • 1982 | Tempos Vega Sicilia was founded in 1982 with the purchase by the Álvarez family.
  • PRESENT | Since Álvarez took over the running of the winery, he has notably improved the quality of all its wines, has renovated the facilities at all the wineries and has restored all the vineyards.
    • They have successfully created four new wineries – Alión (Ribera del Duero-1991, Oremus (Tojak, Hungary 1993), Pintia (Toro-2001) and Macán (Rioja-2009), the latter in collaboration with the Rothschild family.
    • Since Vega Sicilia’s delicate and complex wines have an amazing capacity for ageing that can only be matched by some of the great French wines. They are the so-called “de garde” or wines for the long haul.
    • In the early 1980s Vega Sicilia wines were already famous in Spain only exported to three countries. They were sold using an allocation system that is still used, with a waiting list of over 3,000 today.

“Vega Sicilia is a mythical name that resounds throughout the world, a flagship for its country and a landmark for serious wine collectors everywhere. For some, it is a dream and for others an aspiration.”

PINTIA

D.O. Toro

Pintia is located on the banks of the Duero River, within the Toro Appellation. The extreme weather conditions, very cold in winter and intense heat in the summertime, act upon its complex soil known for its large amount of pebbles. As part of our determination to achieve the elegance of Vega Sicilia, it is essential to choose the perfect moment to harvest, preserving freshness of aromas and the wine’s acidity.

“Having visited Pintia, there was no expense spared in the design of the winery, and the results prove that the ruggedness of Toro can be tamed.” – Annette
